How to Use a Cordless Tire Inflator
A cordless tire inflator is simple to use: connect it to the tire valve, set the target PSI, start inflation, and stop once the tire reaches the recommended pressure. The key is using the right PSI and checking the tire for damage first.
1. Find the right PSI
Use the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle, usually listed on the sticker inside the driver-side door jamb. Your owner’s manual should also list it. Do not use the maximum PSI printed on the tire sidewall as your normal target.
2. Inspect the tire
Before inflating, look for a nail, cut, bulge, or obviously flat tire. If the tire is damaged or losing air quickly, an inflator may help temporarily, but it is not a repair.
3. Attach the hose
- Remove the valve cap.
- Attach the inflator hose securely to the valve stem.
- Make sure you do not hear air leaking from the connection.
4. Set the target pressure
If your inflator has a digital preset, set it to the recommended PSI. Auto-stop inflators shut off when they reach the selected pressure, which helps prevent overinflation.
5. Inflate and recheck
Start the inflator and let it run until the tire reaches the selected pressure. After disconnecting the hose, replace the valve cap and recheck the tire pressure if needed.
6. Know when to stop
- Do not exceed your vehicle’s recommended pressure for normal driving.
- Do not keep driving on a tire that will not hold air.
- Do not rely on an inflator for sidewall damage, major punctures, or a tire that is visibly unsafe.
